When most people think of Portland, Oregon, several images come to mind. Pop culture has defined it as an eclectic, hipster community of freethinkers and artists, with fantastic coffee shops located at every street corner. Geographically, it’s situated spectacularly between the Willamette River and its tributary, the Columbia River, with nature’s border separating Oregon and Washington State.

As Oregon’s largest city, Portland is home to nearly 650,000 residents. Six zones contain 93 neighborhoods inside Portland itself, but if you include the Greater Portland Area, that puts the population at roughly 2.5 million. For people in the low- to middle-class income category, starting out on a homeowner’s quest might prove difficult. For those seeking help, here are some of the safest and most affordable neighborhoods in Portland.

Eastmoreland has been declared the safest community in Portland for families. With a population of around 4,000, this city is safer than 66% of other cities in Oregon and provides a quiet, secure locale for families. It is a popular region because of its proximity to places like the Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI), the botanical Crystal Springs Garden, and the Oaks Park Amusement Park. You will also find an abundance of family-friendly restaurants. The high school is ranked as 5th best in the state. The median home price is $845,000, which is expensive, but for families who put safety first, Eastmoreland is the preferred choice.

For more affordable rates that still provide secure surroundings, many people chose the Northwest District. With a population of just over 12,000, people know it as one of Portland’s safest and most popular neighborhoods. The median home listing price is $640,000, and the crime rates are 60% lower than the average Portland community. Access to downtown is made easily by public transportation and residents enjoy the easily accessible shopping destinations. Located near the Pearl District, residents also have access to fun sights like the Peculiarium and many, amazing dining options.

Linnton is a quaint, former logging town that is located alongside the Willamette River. At a population count of less than 2,000 there is less than a 1 in 42 chance of being a crime victim. The median home price is a reasonable $537,000, which makes Linnton a safe and comfortable region that promotes healthy outdoor activities such as hiking and biking. There are two superb elementary schools to choose from and a large population of school aged children.
